Russia Establishes Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee

Today, the Russian Olympic Committee, the Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sports and the Administration of the City of Sochi officially established the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee. Two key figures from the Sochi 2014 Bid Campaign have been appointed to lead SOOC. Alexander Zhukov was appointed Chair of the SOOC Supervisory Board and Dmitry Chernyshenko was designated Chief Executive Officer of Sochi 2014.
Earlier today the Presidential Council for the Development of Physical Culture and Sport, Excellence in Sports, and the Preparation and Execution of the 2014 XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, approved Sochi 2014 senior management positions, the members of the Sochi 2014 Supervisory Board and its Charter.
In parallel, the State Duma today discussed the bill “On the State Corporation for the Construction of Olympic Venues and the Development of Sochi” in the first reading. The State Corporation will be in charge of implementing all the activities covered in the Federal Target Program for the Development of Sochi with regards to construction of Olympic Venues.
Dmitry Chernyshenko said:
“The Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee has the immense responsibility of delivering the most technically advanced and excellent Games on behalf of the Russian Government, the City of Sochi and the Russian Olympic and Paralympic Committee. We will meet and exceed the highest standards demanded by the Olympic Movement.
The Federal Budget will provide less than one third of the total cost for the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The Organizing Committee will secure the rest of the revenue through sponsorship agreements, broadcasting rights, tickets and licensing.”

Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee functions:
- Planning and managing of all the events of the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi;
- Provision of IOC regulations and observation for the project planning and construction of sports venues and infrastructure facilities as well as the IOC regulations for transportation system, security issues, medical service and others;
- Execution of financial planning and monitoring of the Sochi 2014 budget implementation; provision of financial reports for the IOC on a regular basis;
- Provision of financing for all the activities in the framework of the Sochi 2014 preparation and execution including educational, cultural and promotional events;
- Protection of the IOC intellectual property rights.
Members of the SOOC Supervisory Board are Alexander Zhukov, Dmitry Kozak, Dmitry Chernyshenko, Semen Vainshtok, Viktor Kolodyazhny, Alexey Kudrin, Alexander Tkachev, Leonid Tyagachev, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Vitaly Smirnov, Shamil Tarpischev, Alexander Popov, Vladimir Lukin and Tatiana Dobrokhvalova.
