After a year of extensive work on the Sochi 2014 Games plan, alongside the experts of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and representatives of International Sports Federations, the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee today announced it has identified the optimal locations for sports venues in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountain Cluster. Some sports venues, transport links and infrastructure will gain a new location, including the National Sliding Centre, the Olympic Mountain Sub-Village and a water supply point.
The National Sliding Centre will host the Bobsleigh and Luge competitions at the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and the Mountain Sub-Village will provide the highest levels of comfortable accommodation to elite athletes competing in the mountains of Krasnaya Polyana.
Modern state-of-the-art facilities, designed to the highest international standards and using the most innovative technologies, will be ready to host competitions for a range of sports disciplines by 2012, as per the Sochi 2014 construction plan proposed to the IOC.
The venue locations will satisfy several key objectives laid out by Sochi 2014, including: convenience for athletes and spectators; compactness; full compliance with international environmental standards; and a high level of technical excellence for world-class sports competition. All facilities will leave an outstanding legacy for the local economy and development of future generations of athletes.
During the venue location assessment process, the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee maintained constant dialogue with the IOC, relevant International Federations, construction specialists and environment experts, including NGOs, who have all visited Sochi on several occasions.
Protecting and enhancing the natural environment in the region is one of Sochi 2014’s key priorities. Sochi 2014 has established a special Ecological Council to secure the safety of the environment during the development and implementation of the Games and is committed to creating an environmental legacy for the future of the region. This commitment to the environment has been one of the main factors in decisions on Olympic venue location.
After receiving formal approval from the IOC, in accordance with standard Olympic procedure, the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee can publicly present its final plan.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, President and CEO of Sochi 2014, said:
“I am delighted we have completed one of the most important stages of our Games preparations. A truly collaborative effort, utilising the opinions and expertise of some of the world’s leading specialists through a constructive dialogue, has produced an efficient and well-conceived plan that upholds the Olympic values. This includes paying due care to the very important aspects of environment protection and sustainable development. This hard work has ensured that we will hold the most innovative and unforgettable Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, which leaves behind a valuable long-term legacy for Russia and the rest world.”
