Transport Infrastructure Development
Continues Apace in Sochi
Dmitry Chernyshenko - President and CEO of Sochi 2014 – was today
joined by other senior Russian officials for the opening of a new part of a
Sochi bypass which will relieve traffic in the city center. It’s a critical new
infrastructural development associated with Russia’s first Olympic and
Paralympic Winter Games.
Cutting the red tape at a ceremony to formally open the new road
was an official party including D. H Khatuov, Acting Mayor of Sochi and Victor
Kolodyazhniy, President of Olimpstroy.
This followed a welcoming address from Igor Levitin, Russian
Federation Minister of Transport, and preceded a briefing session at the Sochi
2014 Joint Information Center.
The opening of a new part of a Sochi bypass is part of a wider
program of road infrastructure development, which includes construction of the
bypass which will be fully operational in 2010, a road bridge over a river in
the central region of Sochi and transport interchanges on various roads within
the region. All of these projects are currently on schedule and within
budget.
Included in the road transport infrastructure plans are designated
Olympic routes and traffic lanes. The plans will also increase the use of
environmentally friendly vehicles as well as ensuring that sufficient drivers
are recruited to transport Games participants.
Other transport initiatives for the Sochi 2014 Games include major
developments of railway, port and aviation infrastructure. These include
expanding and modernizing the region’s railway capacity, enhancing the cargo
area of Sochi’s port and construction of 15 marine terminals. The Sochi
Aerodrome airport is also undergoing significant upgrade work.
This integrated approach to the development of road, rail, sea and
air transport in the Krasnodar Region will leave a lasting transport
infrastructure legacy, and will give Sochi even better transport links to Russia
and the rest of the world. Overseeing this work is a dedicated transport
department and Olympic Transport Board. Dmitry Chernyshenko,
President and CEO of Sochi 2014 said:
“This marks another important stage in the development of the
Sochi region. We are in the process of developing a world class transport
infrastructure which will create a memorable experience for visitors, athletes
and officials up to 2014. After the Games, this development will help to ensure
Sochi’s future as an all-year-round international tourist resort and regional
economic hub, for the benefit of future generations.”
