Sochi 2014: Gateway to the best Olympic Winter Games ever

Sochi 2014 proudly submitted its Candidature File to the IOC in Lausanne on January 8, 2007.

In preparing the Candidature File, the Sochi team embarked on a demanding and ambitious world tour to produce the best possible Bid Book by “listening & learning” to many of the IOC’s key international stakeholders. The Bid Book, which was a collaborative effort between Russian and international experts, was compiled over a 12-month period and was the result of nearly 3,000 hours of work. Its highly comprehensive and technically excellent plan was developed to maximize the comfort of the athletes, the Olympic Family and spectators.

As highlighted in the Bid Book, Sochi 2014’s vision focuses on three important points: the Renewal of the Efficient Winter Games Plan, the Renewal of Russia’s Unique Winter Sports Legacy, The Renewal of Our City and Region.

Our plan features 11 custom-built sports venues, located in two convenient clusters less than one hour away from each other. These are the "Coastal Cluster" for ice events and the "Mountain Cluster" in Krasnaya Polyana.

The Sochi 2014 concept is the gateway to organizing the best ever Olympic Winter Games with a focus on the needs of athletes. For the first time in a Winter Olympics, all ice venues on the coast will be located in one Olympic park and within walking distance from each other.

The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will leave a priceless legacy for the Sochi region, the entire country and the Olympic Movement. The Games will serve as a gateway for the economic development in the region, bringing about significant social change, raising environmental consciousness, promoting integration of people with disabilities and increasing participation in winter sport across the nation - and hopefully the world.

The Russian government has offered its full and unqualified support to the Bid and has implemented a US$12 billion Federal investment programme (FTP) to develop the Sochi region into a year-round, world-class resort destination with state-of-the-art infrastructure and accommodations by 2014. As part of the programme, new transport, accommodation and utilities infrastructure, as well as state-of-the-art resorts and sport facilities will be built in Sochi over the next seven years, ensuring that the city will be ready to welcome the world to the Games.

Sochi will become the new winter sport capital of one of the greatest winter sports nations in the world. Today, Russia and Sochi have the resources, the expertise and the passion to organize a unique and simply unforgettable winter sport celebration.
