Our Venue Plan
Sochi. Focused on delivering memorable Winter Games

The Sochi 2014 Bid Committee, Russian Olympic Committee, Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sport and Sochi City Administration all recognise the significant long-term legacies in sport and social development that will result from hosting the 2014 Games in Sochi. Indeed, the Sochi 2014 bid took inspiration from a Federal Programme initiated by President Putin to develop winter sports facilities and resorts in the Krasnaya Polyana district.

The venues proposed for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi are set in coastal or mountain districts. Both settings have something in common memorable and beautiful backdrops along the Black Sea or the peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. Our fundamental principal in determining both types of venues has been to ensure they meet the highest standards for sport and are sustainable, both in terms of green construction standards and in terms of long-term legacy to the community.

The coastal venues are to be located in close proximity to the Olympic Village and in close or immediate proximity to railway stations. All venues are also to be situated in close proximity to the Main Media Centre with easy access for the Olympic Family.

The mountain venues, located in and around the spectacular Krasnaya Polyana valley, make maximum use of existing facilities and venues under development, with primary consideration given to the ideal conditions required for each sport. These venues offer maximum legacy use for elite and recreational sport and are included in the national sports development programme under the auspices of President Putin.

Currently, existing venues include the Olympic Stadium for Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Psekhako Ridge for Cross Country and Biathlon and the Alpica Service for Snowboard. Rosa Khutor, which will feature courses for all Alpine disciplines, is under construction, while the main hockey arena and the bobsled venue are planned for construction next year.

Non-competition venues such as the Olympic Village, International Broadcast Centre (IBC) and Main Press Centre (MPC) will be located in the Imeretinskaya Valley along Sochi s Mediterranean-style coastline. The Olympic Village is an integral part of Sochi s long-term plans to create a world-class resort and exhibition complex with easy access to the airport, the coastal venues and within reasonable travel time to the alpine area. The mountain Village is located right in the heart of the Krasnaya Polyana valley, less than 10 minutes from any of the venues.

The IBC and MPC will be housed in a single structure and will be converted post-Games into an entertainment, shopping and accommodation complex for Sochi residents and visitors.

Overall, the venues planned for the 2014 Games in Sochi place the needs of the athletes at the forefront of all planning and development to ensure the best conditions for both training and competition. Keeping their interests at heart will not only secure a memorable experience for all participants of the Games, it will also contribute to effective training of elite athletes in Russia for years to come.
